Many students can attest to the fact that JC Mathematics at H2 level is a challenging subject to master. It requires understanding advanced mathematical concepts across a range of topics. Scoring well is not an easy feat, but every student can improve when given proper guidance. Getting a tutor who is able to explain problems in a simple and concise way can be more productive than trying to figure it out on your own. Mr Jackie Lee, who has been teaching JC Mathematics for more than 20 years, shares his views on how to get the best out of this subject.
Owning a good set of notes is the first step to success. An effective set of notes should be easy to read with examples and practice questions set at progressive levels of difficulty. It should be able to explain concepts clearly and inspire students to explore further.
Besides, it should allow students to easily refer to it when in doubt. Mr Lee suggests that students should do themselves a favour by sourcing a good set of notes to optimise their learning.
With the advent of technology, teaching and learning are no longer restricted to a classroom.
When dealing with academic difficulties, students can now make good use of their mobile devices to consult their friends and even tutors. They should not be embarrassed to do so. Mr Lee reveals that he frequently gets bombarded with students’ queries via messaging apps, even at odd hours of the morning.
He points out that when he was a JC student in the early 1990s, there was a lack of such channels. Thus, he encourages students to cherish and capitalise on this new convenience and accessibility of knowledge without any hesitation.
